2025 MENA Cinema: Audiences Aren’t Fading—They’re Evolving

Audience behavior across the MENA is shifting—and while it’s not a full reinvention, there are clear signs that the way people watch and choose films is evolving. For us in distribution, reading these cues isn’t just helpful—it’s becoming essential.

A Young, Opinionated Crowd
The region’s population continues to skew young, especially in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Kuwait. These audiences are plugged in, vocal, and increasingly responsive to content that speaks to their world. That doesn’t always mean local productions—but it often means stories with emotional or cultural relevance. Big action and horror still work, but so does anything that feels current and authentic.

Cinema Is Still Social Here
Across the MENA, moviegoing remains a group activity. Whether it’s friends, couples, or families, people are showing up together—and making choices that reflect a shared experience. This is part of what separates the region from more individualistic viewing cultures, and it influences everything from release strategies to trailer edits.

More Than a Ticket—It’s the Whole Experience
The growth in premium cinema formats isn’t slowing down. IMAX, 4DX, recliner seats, and gourmet F&B are now expected in many cases. For audiences, especially younger ones, the environment plays a role in the decision to leave home and pay for a movie. This isn't about gimmicks—it’s about value.

Digital Habits Matter
We’re seeing a mature digital user base: people booking online, using loyalty programs, and engaging with marketing through social media. Platforms are no longer just about convenience—they’re also shaping what people choose to watch and how often they return.

What We’re Learning
None of this means there’s one formula for success—but it does mean we’re working with an involved, & more expressive audience than ever before. As a distributor, I see our role as part strategist, part listener. The more we understand who’s in the seats—and why—the better positioned we are to bring in the right films and make the right noise around them.
