Football enthusiasts attend premiere of “ THE MATCH” - Gulf News Today
DUBAI: Scores of football enthusiasts from different walks of life have attended the premiere of “The Match,” the legendary 1986 FIFA World Cup quarter-final between Argentina and England revisiting one of football’s most iconic and enduringly debated moments. Ahead of the film’s theatrical release on Thursday, The Plot Pictures hosted the Mena premiere at Roxy Cinemas, City Walk.
The event brought together leading figures from the UAE’s football and sporting community, including athletes, coaches, football personalities, media and creators, celebrating one of the sport’s most enduring stories. Directed by Santiago Franco and Juan Cabral, “The Match” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival before receiving its domestic theatrical release in Argentina through Buena Vista International, a Walt Disney Company.
Through rare archival footage and intimate first-hand accounts from the players and personalities who lived the match, the film revisits an event whose impact continues to resonate across generations of football fans. Talking to Gulf Today, Pratixa Kanojia, Founder and CEO of The Plot Pictures, said, “We’ve always believed in championing films that spark conversation and leave a lasting cultural impact. While we’ve become known for bringing bold and distinctive cinema such as ‘The Secret Agent’ to audiences across Mena, ‘The Match’ marks an exciting new chapter as our first feature documentary. “It perfectly reflects our belief that exceptional stories transcend format. “More than a football film, it is a powerful exploration of history, identity, rivalry and the moments that continue to unite and divide generations.” “There couldn’t be a more relevant time to share it with audiences across the region.” Santiago Franco, Director of The Match, said: “We never set out to make a film simply about football. We wanted to explore how one match became part of the identity of two nations and why, forty years later, people are still debating what happened that day.
At its heart, ‘The Match’ is about memory, rivalry and the extraordinary ability of sport to unite, divide and shape history.” The documentary offers a timely look back at the match that produced Diego Maradona’s unforgettable “Hand of God” goal and one of the greatest solo goals in football history. More than a sports documentary, “The Match” explores how a single game transcended football to become a story of rivalry, politics, national identity and legacy.
Early critical response has been equally compelling. Variety described “The Match” as “one of the most absorbing and accessible documentaries ever made about the sport,” praising its ability to transcend football and explore the political, cultural and emotional significance of one of the game’s defining moments. Its MENA release also comes at a remarkable moment, with Argentina and England preparing to renew one of football’s greatest rivalries on the World Cup stage for the first time in forty years. As the game continues to debate fairness, officiating and the role of VAR, “The Match” serves as a reminder that football’s defining moments have always lived in the space between brilliance, controversy and human judgement.
